On November 4th, 2008 the definition of marriage will be challenged and maybe redefined. The dictionary defines marriage as, "the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc" http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Marriage. The family is ordained of God. Proposition 8 isn't just about the happiness of gays and lesbian couples but it is about protecting the legal definition of marriage and religious freedoms we hold so dear to our hearts. This is a serious matter and shouldn't be taken lightly. Here are some of the effects if it this proposition fails to pass...
- Religious liberties and freedom of speech may be cut short. Therefore the amendment we have to speak out will be taken away. The rights of parents to teach their children their own values and beliefs could also be taken away. How scary is that we can't even touch our own children what we believe and the values we grew up with.
- Gay marriage can be taught in the schools with courts saying we have no right to object or to interfere.
- Traditional marriage provides a solid and well-established social identity to children. It increases the likelihood that they will be able to form a clear gender identity, with sexuality closely linked to both love and procreation. By contrast, the legalization of same-sex marriage likely will erode the social identity, gender development, and moral character of children.
- Some European countries have already legalized same-sex marriage and see the traditional definition of marriage will further erode the already weakened stability of marriages and family generally. This can create harmful consequences for society.
We don't hate the gays or lesbians; we just want to protect the definition of marriage between a man and a woman. If this doesn't pass, our children will have a harder time defining the sanctity of marriage. So please spread the word and tell others to vote for proposition 8!
